We Want to Hear from YOU!

Please take a few minutes to tell us how you heard of us, the York County Time Bank. Below is a short poll that should only take a couple of minutes to answer. If you have just a few more minutes we would love for you to share a bit more in the comments, such as which magazine or newspaper, which social network, etc.

If there is anything else you would like to share with us we would love to hear it! Any feedback about our bank is welcome.

And don’t forget, you can join us this Monday October 21 at the York Friends Meetinghouse to learn more! We will be having a potluck starting at 6pm and the meeting will start at 7pm. You are more than welcome to come to both or just come to the meeting. We hope to see you there!

We’re Continuing to Grow!


Time Banks page 1

The York County Time Bank continues to grow as more and more York Countians (extending also to Hanover, New Oxford and even Gettysburg!) are choosing to share their time and talents with their community in order to help meet one another’s needs. We are currently 98 members strong and have exchanged over 300 hours. 
Gracie has officially made her move-best of luck to you Gracie! We will certainly miss you here in York! 
Local business owner, Marc Laucks of Marc Laucks and Co. (http://marclaucks.com/) is kindly donating the design of our logo and some initial print materials.
Our next meeting will be held on Monday, October 21st at the Quaker Meeting House at 135 West Philadelphia Street. The Pot Luck dinner starts at 6:00pm and the official meeting starts at 7:00pm. The meeting is a great place to meet the folks you might be exchanging services with and to share your ideas to help steer the direction that the York County Time Bank will take as it moves into the future! We will also be looking for enthusiastic folks who would be willing to share their passion and talents for the operation of the Time Bank through marketing, writing press releases for the newspaper, facilitating meetings, leading a small focus groups, building relationships in the community, etc.
If you are thinking of volunteering, remember:
1. Your volunteer time to the operation of the Time Bank is worth hours that you can exchange for other services!
2. Remember to ONLY volunteer to do things that make you feel energetic, excited and like you are doing what you were “meant to do.” That is the whole idea of time banking-doing what you love in service of your community.
Attached is a picture of the article on the front page of the Living section of the York Daily Record yesterday. It is a reprint from the September/October issue of Smart Magazine. Sorry I couldn’t find a link to send  you-so the picture is the best I could do! If anyone has a link to the actual online article, I would love to have it so I could forward it to the group. (The Smart Magazine article has been linked, the article from the YDR has not been posted online as of this post.)

September Meeting and Helpful Links

Meetings will be held every 3rd Monday of each month. The location will most likely be changing, but until we have a new location they will continue to be held at the Friends Meetinghouse. The next meeting will be October 21, 2013, all are welcome! There will be a potluck starting at 6:00pm, followed by the meeting at 7:00 pm; come for both or just the meeting, whichever works best for you.

The mobile app was discussed, this is very new so don’t hesitate to contact hOurworld if you come across anything not working correctly or if you have any questions. If you don’t feel comfortable contacting them yourself please let us know and we will relay the information.

There is also still some concern on how to use the Time and Talents software. I have included some helpful links to hopefully answer some questions.  Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or get confused.

While we continue on the logo and mission statement a template for temporary business cards have been created, you can download the template here. Print them out and spread the word! The marketing committee is hard at work getting everything done for the logo and we are lucky to have Marc on board from Marc Laucks and Company, Inc. helping with the design.

We are still in need for some alternate meeting locations, the meeting house doesn’t heat well so once it starts getting cold we may want somewhere warmer.  So, if anyone has some ideas, please let us know.

hOurworld goes Mobile!

Yesterday the news was shared that hOurworld has gone mobile, and if you are anything like me that is very exciting news!

I’m not often near a computer but I always have my phone. I took the time to download the app and play around a bit, so I thought I’d share just how easy it is to use. The app is available in both apple and android markets, Gracie shared an email and post yesterday that had a link. They link was for a survey, fill out the survey (you get a half hour for doing so) and at the end you will see links for the app. You could just search for the app, but why not take the time and gain a half hour?

Once you download the app, you just need to enter your log in, or you can even join if you haven’t already done so. Once you enter, you can see new messages, offers, requests and even your profile.



I searched offers and requests, I took the time to respond to a request as well as add my own request. You can even log your hours right through the app.



When responding to a request, it will redirect you directly to your email. So that’s simple. What I did find frustrating was when I wrote my own request it doesn’t drop down, meaning it is shown as one long line of text. This made it really hard to edit and review what I wrote. (So yes my request has some grammar and spelling errors.) I also couldn’t go back and edit the request after I posted it, or at least I could figure it out this morning.


If you are a member of a group, you can send messages to your fellow group members. You can email individuals directly, you really can do everything you could online on the app. I know, personally, I will use the app way more than the website.  I do most things through apps, this blog, my personal blog, emails, social networking…basically everything. So with that being said, play around with it…let us know what you think! 

Our Time Bank and Social Media


I just want to take this time to remind and share with everyone that along with this website you can also follow Time Bank Happenings on Twitter and Facebook. This site is the main source to stay up to date, but please feel free to join or follow our other social sites; not only to keep up with what is going on but to meet other members. The reason for other social media sites is to help our Time Bank grow and to help get the word out. You can follow all or none that is up to you, but the options are out there.  There is also now an option to receive email updates of this site, so any posts will be delivered right to your inbox.

Our Facebook Group allows members to interact with other members, build relationships, and share information among friends. Whereas, the Twitter account was set up to share more with news and media, and other local organizations. We have followed most local news stations, publications, etc. in hopes to spread the word of the bank. (Some of which are already following us back!)

So, please don’t feel overwhelmed by the various social media. If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact us.

August 12, 2013 Meeting Recap

Part of the growth of our local Time Bank is that we hold monthly meetings to meet fellow members, share ideas and concerns, and work on planning for the future of our bank. These meetings are open to ALL members and people from the community who are interested in learning more about our bank and/or are passionate about the ideas a time bank has to offer.  We are a new bank that is growing daily, we are currently a group of 64 active members that are passionate about our bank and want to see it succeed.


At this time, our meetings are held at the York Friends Meetinghouse, located at 135 West Philadelphia Street in downtown York. The meeting starts at 7:00 pm, and for those who are able to make it, prior to the meeting we have a potluck at 6:00 pm.

Our past meetings (8/12/2013) agenda included:

  1. Nominate a Volunteer Coordinator; someone to help with new memberships, member questions, etc.

  2. Consider committee formation/Core group to help move the Time Bank forward

  3. Report on any connections made since last meeting: accountants, lawyers, marketing, etc.

  4. Alternative meeting locations. Member homes, churches, community buildings, etc.

  5. Review and Finalize Mission Statement

  6. Plan multi-media marketing strategy

  7. Identify structure needed to succeed

Decisions on these topics are addressed in the minutes, but we did create a Core Group, which consists of 5-6 members; a Marketing Committee, consisting of 5 members; Volunteer Mediators, currently consisting of 3 members; along with a small group to continue finalizing our Mission Statement.

Our current Governing Body for our Time Bank will be those who attend the meetings at that given time. This may change as the Bank matures and we have more members, but at this time we were in agreement that this will work best.

The Core Group is a team of people who can be contacted between meetings in regards to any developments you may have, questions and/or concerns, or any other ideas that you would like brought up at the next meeting.

The Marketing Committee is just that, a team that will continue working on marketing the Time Bank, getting the word out through press releases, websites/social networking, and any other means.

Volunteer Mediators, are a small team that will help work through any discrepancies that may arise after time has been exchanged. Hopefully, these mediators won’t have too much to do, but there is always a chance that someone may not be happy with a service and they will help the parties involved work out a solution.
